AVRA CITY boutique HOTEL - RENOVATION

The Avra City Hotel is housed in a historical building of the 20th century, in the centre of the city of Chania. It is located in contact with the Municipal Garden, with its main facade on Tzanakaki Street. The main concern of the design was the enhancement of the existing building, the renovation of the interior and the modernization of the building to meet the modern requirements of a high standard tourist accommodation.

The building consists of the ground floor where the reception area is located followed by the bar and restaurant area, conference room and five floors that accommodate 27 accommodation rooms. The accommodation rooms are located in a later part of the building in contact with the original, designed in such a way that it preserves and enhances the historicity of the historic building. The whole area is completed by the central inner courtyard of the hotel.

The main characteristic of the original shell is the neoclassicism that governs it, an element that was maintained and highlighted throughout the design process, both in terms of the facades and the details of the interior.

On the facade level, in order to preserve the classical character of the buildings, new colours were chosen in the existing shades. In addition, in order to enhance its special architectural characteristics, the facade was emphasized by appropriate lighting after a corresponding study.

The design of the interiors of the accommodation refers to the luxury of the neoclassical architecture itself by introducing its characteristics in design details. In order to preserve this character, it was decided to make the minimum interventions in the reception area, focusing on changing the ceiling and adapting it to the lighting study that was made for the appropriate diffusion of light in the space and its enhancement.

The private areas of the hotel were treated in the same way. In addition, furniture was designed which is characterized by the element of wood which was chosen to be combined with either earthy fabric (bed headboards) or marble (elements of boudoir, storage areas and mirror furniture in private spaces).
