VILLA CANEA NOSTRUM

Study of restoration and decoration, old two-storey urban residence. It is an old tiled stone two-storey building, located in the center of the city of Chania, on a corner plot of 670sq.m.

The main objective of the architectural study is to highlight the remarkable architectural elements of the building, in conjunction with the restoration and modernization of its shell. It is converted into a two-storey residence, now single, to which an internal staircase is added, in place of the old external staircase. Specifically, the ground floor includes the two-day areas, an open plan living-living-dining-kitchen area and sleeping areas, three bedrooms with their private bathrooms. The semi-basement includes an open plan kitchen-dining-living area, two bedrooms with private bathrooms and a relaxation area with an indoor pool.

The peculiarity in the new configuration of the basement lies in the fact that the two-day spaces are in direct contact with the surrounding area and the new outdoor circular swimming pool created there, while at the same time the living area separates the private spaces from the public areas, acting as a filter. Between the indoor pool area and the living room, a permeable wall is created that houses a wine cellar.

The aim of the decoration study is for the two floors to have a different character and style in order to be able to operate independently. Because it is a rented residence, this makes it attractive to a wider range of visitors.

The ground floor is chosen to acquire the character of an urban modern residence, with references to objects and textures of earlier decades. Parquet wooden flooring, objects with gold details, marble and leather, strong elements of the reconstruction era of the building are the basic decorative principles. In all areas of the house, furniture, equipment and decorative details – elements of the modern trend – create a contrast with the existing space and bridge the present with the then.

The semi-basement, on the other hand, is transformed into a relaxation area, with references to holiday homes. Internally, it manages to combine local architecture with contemporary design, both in terms of floor plan and in the use of materials, where stone and wood dominate, both internally and externally. In other words, a living space is created within the urban center in complete harmony with nature, combining the pressed cement mortar with the natural wood, the robustness of the stone walls and the Mediterranean plants (olives, lavender, rosemary, etc.).
