PALLAS PHILOCALY

The work that won the 1st Prize in the category "Ongoing projects – Interior decoration of a shop" in the competition Interior Design Awards 2021.

The building is located on the Tobazi Coast, on the coastal front of the Old Town of Chania. The front of the building is in contact with the port zone and its south side with Kastelli hill. The building is a monument, as it is over 100 years old, based on photographic documentation. It was built in the early 1900s on the location of a large long building (Venetian arsenal) which was destroyed or demolished.

It is a two-storey tiled stone building with morphological elements of neoclassical architecture and a symmetrical façade. It is assumed that its initial use of a building was warehouses on the ground floor and main areas on the first floor, as the platform at that time was not large and during the winter months, the sea entered the ground floor of the coastal front. The building belongs to the Public Real Estate Company S.A. and on the first floor today there are offices of the 1st Port Department of Venetian Port of Chania. The reuse and renovation study concerns only the ground floor section.

In the center of the two side rooms is observed the later addition of reinforced concrete substrates and structures, a type of intervention, which is estimated not to exceed 30 years (around 1990). Their addition was probably made to avoid oscillations of the mesopatoma.

The aim of the architectural and decoration study was to turn the space into a full-meal mass catering business and the sale of goods. Entering the building is located in the reception area. To its right there is a tasting and wine tasting area and a wine cellar. Centrally, place the pastry shop and the oven. On the left, the kitchen and the sale of goods are placed. For the optimal operation of the space, the two lateral openings of the inner walls are enlarged. The study proposes an intervention with respect to the history of the building, highlighting it, as today it is an auxiliary space not visited by the general public.
